Youth Investment Center

Youth Investment Center

The Youth Investment Center is a statewide AmeriCorps program dedicated to providing services to foster youth and disadvantaged youth and improving their outcomes. AmeriCorps members serve in school districts, nonprofits, Community Action Agencies, and local County Children Protective Services Agencies. Members act as mentors to foster youth to build skills necessary for a successful transition to adulthood, including graduation from high school. Youth mentors work one-on-one with youth and facilitate life skills training, financial literacy lessons, emancipation support groups, and academic assistance.

There are over 4,000 foster youth between the ages of 0 to 18 years, in the Sacramento area region, including Amador, El Dorado, Sacramento, Solano, Tuolumne, and Yolo Counties. The number of foster youth in Sacramento County ranks fifth in California. In 2012, approximately 1,700 California youth exited from foster care. Outcomes for California’s foster youth are bleak, foster youth often face lower graduation, employment and housing rates.
